Heavy medium cyclones (also called dense medium cyclones) are specific gravity or density separating devices designed to process run-of-mine materials having portions of lighter and heavier materials.

Their design is well suited for separating iron ore, platinum, diamonds, lithium, magnesium and coal.
How does it work?

Feed material enters the cyclone in the form of a slurry of mineral solids water and magnetite or ferrosilicon.

The transporting media forms a pseudo fluid, which—due to the fine sizing of the ferrosilicon and magnetite, and its even dispersion throughout the water volume—has a relative density greater than water.
